The ultimate guide to sapphic fisting

Words by Katie Baskerville

In a world of fast sex, immediate pleasure and instant gratification, vaginal fisting demands something we are rarely afforded: patience, attention and presence.

Fisting has a bad rep and is often negatively depicted as wholly violent and obscene (whatever that means). Yet this couldn’t be further from the truth.

However, the entrenched misogyny surrounding vaginal fisting and sapphic sex more broadly tells us there’s more to fisting than we’ve been led to believe. While vaginal fisting elicits huge moral outrage from anyone who hasn’t done the work to unlearn heterocentric purity biases, it also sparks a profundity in those who do it.

By rejecting the conditions comp-het has told us to be fearful of, and by experiencing an aching pleasure that is deep and intimate, sapphic fisting wholeheartedly (or, whole-handedly) dismantles everything we’ve been sold on the capacity of female sexual pleasure. So much so that it raises the question: does it matter if vaginal fisting is taboo?

Especially when, in 2023, a paper published in the Journal of Sex Education proposed that fisting can encourage us to “think about safer sex and pleasure in sexuality education.”

But how can sapphic fisting teach us about safer sex? Why is the taboo of fisting part of its appeal? And how can we do it safely?
