Over the last two decades, television has gradually become a beacon of strong LGBTQIA+ representation, thanks to an array of queer classics such as Queer as Folk, Pose, Noah's Arc, The L Word, Will & Grace, and more. Despite this increased visibility, there’s still room for improvement, especially when it comes to representing the B in LGBTQIA+. While a ton of queer-inclusive shows have featured prominent, fully fleshed-out gay male characters, the same can’t be said for bisexual men, who have been historically villainised for their sexuality or portrayed as outdated stereotypes.

Fortunately, the tide has begun to shift in recent years, with a growing number of shows presenting bisexual male characters who aren’t one-note caricatures or sidelined figures. In light of this ongoing bisexual renaissance on TV, we’ve curated a list of series featuring lead bisexual characters that have helped advance LGBTQIA+ representation. Check out the full list below.

9-1-1

Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, 9-1-1 follows a group of police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and dispatchers in Los Angeles as they navigate perilous emergencies, love, friendship, and relationships. Over nine seasons, the show has introduced many LGBTQIA+ characters. However, it wasn’t until season seven that fans received much-needed bisexual representation through Evan "Buck" Buckley (Oliver Stark).

While it may seem daunting to watch six seasons before Buck’s exciting coming-out moment, many fans will agree that plenty of subtle clues about his sexuality are sprinkled throughout. Plus, you’ll also get the chance to become absolutely obsessed with the fan-favourite — albeit unofficial — ship, “Buddie.” Popular since season two, the ship pairs Buck with his close friend and firefighter co-worker, Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman).

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

First premiering in 2015, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a critically acclaimed comedy created and written by Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna. The series follows Rebecca Bunch, a Yale and Harvard-educated lawyer who, after briefly running into her former boyfriend Josh Chan, abruptly leaves New York to follow him to his hometown of West Covina, California.

In addition to featuring incredible musical numbers, hilarious moments and important discussions surrounding mental health, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend includes a plethora of LGBTQIA+ characters, including bisexual lawyer Darryl Whitefeather (Peter Gardner). Introduced as Rebecca’s new boss, Darryl’s bi-awakening is incredibly wholesome, taking place shortly after his divorce from his wife, Stacey, in the first season. While we won’t get into the particulars of his journey because... well, spoilers, know that his queer story features a fantastic beginning, middle and end.
